chirp 64 (thesaint)

chirp 64
acrylic, gouache and oil on birch
3x4'

i had a blast with this one
and i stopped myself before i ruined it (imop)
i started with the silkscreen pattern and ended with some airbrush and oil paint.
im open to criticism, what do you think of it, the airbrush parts and the patterned parts?
does it jibe?

hell yesssss i like this one a lot. my favorite part is definately the pattern (cage?) in the background and how it fades into the red. i love love how you draw things by kind of sectioning them off...like those leaves...there's sooo much great underpainting and it's very inspiring...i try to emulate that but i can never do it even close to how you do it...which parts are airbrushed? how do you like that airbrush? how'd you learn how to use it and everything?
make a post about airbrushing if you ever get a chance...i'd love to learn more about it...i guess i could just google it..i think i will...but i feel like it'll all be about how to make air brushed jesus hoodies or something...ok...awesome stuff, man!

thanks guys.
glad it does something.

process:
i started a drawing of the bird then with a changing blue underpainting.
i did the black screenprinting next and kept the pattern "big"by flipping the screen(learned from cygnet) and letting slight nuances of difference happen.
a slightly shitty quality. but i know its just for background.i painted out the pattern that got into the bird and left some traces.
then i did the orangy vert stripes in the top area.
drew the geranium in from another painting i did painted the redoranges in then airbrushed the halo of white (with another cut out and taped on pattern that mimicked the black screenprint pattern.
then airbrushed all that darkness on the top.
i just got a slight hang of the airbrush
one hand i would have the gun then the other i would dodge using a paper bag cut into a quasi circular shape to get an edge.

then i cleaned up some details
but really , this one came out quick.
i should stop soon more often

interesting. would love to see this one full size! I am also really drawn into that receding pattern. I was just sitting here having a beer and thinking "I should go paint." Then I stopped by Lightgeist and saw your and Tim's new work. Bravo both of you. OK signing off to go paint.
