white background birds

here are chirp 16 top
and chirp 17 bottom
i keep exporing these birds
so with these two
i was watching dave chappelle...
maybe more importantly i been watching my process
these in particular i decided they were done before i put the big wash of color in the background
what do you think of them in comparison with the previous colored background birds?
the "public" reaction seems to be more in favor of the "finished" look of the others.
im glad i did these

i like these a lot because you're creating a new challenge for yourself and that's when your work is always the best and most interesting and i think that's always a very important and difficult thing to do with painting. making new things work...here i think the white background is awesome. i like the washes too but this white is very nice. maybe you could try painting the birds a little different now that you changed the background..or maybe even like one or two lines running through the background would be interesting, too.

I embrace white space in all its colors and forms. There's an urge -- and even public pressure -- to fill up every inch of a painting. I like that you've consciously chosen these spaces. It's interesting how the lower bird's beak goes off the painting.

i loooooove unfinished looking paintings and drawings.i think that overworking a piece is the biggest tragedy in making art.
