not sure if this large piece is finished.
acrylic on canvas 44 by 44
my goal was to set up multiple passages that played against each other
i like the self portrait drawing and im debating adding paint
i might just glaze everything except the port.or the exact opposite.
what do you think?
are the drips too much?
im thinking about adding one more big element.
like a carefully rendered elk

i don't think the drips are too much and i think a carefully rendered elk would be nice. i really, really like it when there is something chaotic (drips) and then something careful to contrast. so that might be cool. i especially like the yellow strip going through the middle.
what do you mean by multiple passages? i think that maybe a multiple colored bar might work better than the text at the bottom. lately i haven't been into text in paintings...just a personal thing though...
I'm usually not a fan of text in paintings either, but some people can pull it off. I think you've made it work. I like it as is, but I dig the elk idea too.
trav, like the painting, and like the idea of adding one more big element...your idea of adding a carefully rendered elk feels very right...
i do think the painting wd benefit greatly from one more big element.
as for glazing, and the text, i am fine with these ideas...
do like the thin strip cutting through the middle left to right.
kk.
thanks
text is a curse, no doubt. for some reason i pursue it. ive had minimal success. but i chase it regardless. like an art stalker
richard prince and ed rusha are in my favorites list
text is an element that is so tricky
for one, the meaning of the word
2 the other meanings of the word
3 the visual aspect of the word
4 the connections the word has to the images
and on...
phew
i think i pulled it off with the sympathy cards but not sure where to take it with my canvases.
molly thinks this is a retro painting. a pickard of late days
i think thats why i like it so far.
thanks for the comments
very helpful.
TEXT. relating to the piece of art is so simple yet so easily can confuse the viewer.
Should one think of the viewer?
What if I painted a truck and wrote bus?
Simply upto the artist.
But is not the art directing the text?
I often use text and cover it up. Then I have more guidence to what the painting is about.
Trav, I WANT THIS PAINTING.
